Is He Dead?

After collapsing from an asthma attack, a South African man was declared dead and taken to the morgue, where he woke up the next day, very much alive.Undertakers heard screaming from the other room and were initially scared to act, thinking the noises were made by a ghost. The man would not allow the release of his name, but described himself as a grandfather in his 60s. The man spent at least 21 hours in the morgue refrigerator, and recalled nothing from between the attack and the moment he woke up, confused, and very cold. This is an important incident because it exposes a very real problem with the way bodies are taken care of. Medical professionals were not called in for this particular incident, and instead, undertakers were called directly and performed only a brief check for vitals. Sizwe Kupelo, of the Eastern Cape Health Department says, "Those guys aren't trained paramedics. They're about business." Without an official death certificate from health services, events like this can become a relatively common occurance. Last month a Russian woman was declared dead after suffering a hearth attack, and woke up at her own funeral, the shock of which caused her to die for realz.

Potato Bug Adds Twist to Man's Morning "Grub"

McDonald's has been the clear choice for local gourmet dining for years. And since last week, its credibility has only increased. LinkBoyJT is the username of the Reddit user who posted an image of the salty surprise he found in his McDonald's hash brown Wednesday morning, which appears to be some sort of deep fried cockroach or moth.
"I took the thing and showed it to the manager and she marked my receipt so I could get the same meal for free the next time I come in for breakfast. She didn't really seem all that concerned" says LinkBoyJT.
It turns out, he is not the only victim of these so-called "mealbreakers." Claims have been made worldwide about finding insect parts in fast food meals. One man in Ontario even claimed to have found over 50 dead ants in his breakfast burrito.

Fat Cat Dies, Millions of Americans Left Distraught

39 lb Meow's struggle with obesity ended abruptly on May 5th, when he died. Meow's asthma and other respiratory problems, caused by his immense weight problem, proved too much for the two year old cat to deal with, and he died the night before his next weigh-in. Mary Martin of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter  says that Meow's death came as a shock, as he had recently been "walking up stairs and seeking affection," which were out of the ordinary, but positive new behaviors for this fat feline. Fortunately, he did not die for nothing. Meow's story captured the heart of millions and brought light to the problem of animal obesity. Thank you, Meow. We will remember.

Bad Mom?

Over the past few years, pageant shows have sparked major controversy over parenting methods, causing mothers across America to ask, "How young is too young for makeup?" Lindsay Cross stumbled into the issue herself when she posted an entry on a Mommy Confession blog, admitting that she and her daughter, four year old Brenna use cosmetics as a bonding technique. Cross says that every time there is a recital, picture day, or "any other event she deems fancy," she and her daughter sit down to curl her hair and apply a full face of makeup. While Cross says her daughter is only playing dress up, and make believing that she is older than she is, Brenna says she does it because, "It makes me pretty." It is this kind of thinking that causes child psychologists like Henry Paul to deem these habits unhealthy. Pressures from magazines and television instill poor self esteem and self image because of the constant struggle to reach "perfection" and "beauty," as labeled by the media. The "I'm only as good as I look" attitude is a big part of what causes psychological disorders in America's youth, particularly young women, such as depression and eating disorders. While Lindsay Cross may only think she is only allowing her daughter to have a little fun, she may inadvertently be causing the low self esteem she would normally not encounter until her early teens.

Fat Cat

Two years old and 39.1 lbs, Meow (That's his name. The owners got real creative there.), a flabby tabby from Santa Fe is now up for adoption.Without the resources to care for this continuously feeding feline, the owner was forced to leave him to be cared for by the Humane Society, with only a few parting comments. "He was a fit  kitten," she says, "Then suddenly.... ballooned." Meow does not play with mice like a normal cat would, and is unable to fit through the toy tunnels provided to him by the shelter. According to his veterinarian, Meow is supposed to weigh about 12 lbs. Instead, he is over three times that, the feline equivilant of a human weighing 600 lbs. Meow is at serious risk for heart problems, and is being put on a diet. Though vets are baffled by what his previous owners had been feeding him, he has already lost 2 lbs, taking one short, earth-shattering step in the right direction.

Not Your Average Lemonade Stand

Three months ago, six year old Drew Cox learned that his father had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. After publishing his father's story on an online support blog, Drew opened a lemonade stand in his small Texas town. Little did he know, his innocent effort would go a long way.People across the country read Drew's story and drove miles to donate to the young business man. In one day, the stand raised over ten thousand dollars, all of which will go towards helping Drew's dad. Drew describes his father as his hero, stating, "He's so important to me. We love to play with each other, lots of times. We play games." The moral of the story? It turns out that even a six year old's lemonade stand can do more to cure cancer than hundreds of people "liking" or sharing the same disturbing Facebook photo.

Almost Justice

Being a national issue, most of us have probably heard about the outrageous travesty that resulted in the death of an innocent and defenseless teen, Trayvon Martin. Now, a month and a half after committing unprovoked murder of 17 year old Martin in Sanford, Florida, George Zimmerman has finally been charged for his crimes. Zimmerman is being charged with second degree murder, indicating that there was an element of malice involved when Martin was shot. Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to these charges, claiming that he shot the teen in self defense, after being involved in a life or death struggle with Martin. A life or death struggle that resulted in no visual injuries whatsoever to Zimmerman, according to an ABC News surveillance tape taken merely four hours after Martin was shot, that is. If convicted, Zimmerman faces up to a lifetime in prison, which is certainly more than his victim was allowed. Until then, demonstrations and public outcry are an ongoing occurance across the country. No matter how you look at it, Martin's death was an unnecessary tragedy, and justice must be sought so that gross contradictions of the equality and compassion America stands for, like this one, may never be committed again.

Prodigal Teacher Zac Rueth Announces Long Awaited Return

Whether through memories of the resounding statement, "You're on my time now," followed by a furtive glance down at a bulky Walmart watch from under triangle eyebrows, or fond recollections of open abuse from students to teacher, we all remember Zac Rueth, the now estranged English "teacher" from back in middle school. Now, after several years of wandering the globe, living off the land, and soul searching, Rueth makes his long awaited return to Gibraltar. With the loss of Gibraltar's heroes, Shirley Mann and Paul Bremel, the school has found its staff understaffed and a little less than entertained. To spice things up a little, the administration has decided to bring back someone who already has experience with Gibraltar students. Rueth rejoins the Door County community with unbridled enthusiasm, saying, "I just missed you all so much! I mean, ever since those girls wrote a play about my murder for a 7th grade English assignment, I just knew I belonged here." His comments were cut short by a fit of baa-ing and scuffing the ground with his hooves. Housing for Rueth has been provided by Al Johnson's, as bountiful grazing space was a necessity. Rueth will make his return in the fall of 2012, and will be teaching Ancient Mythology and AP Biology: Hooved Mammals. Needless to say, the student body is buzzing with anticipation of their beloved mentor.
"It's like an early graduation present!" says junior, Megan Swain. "Spending my last year of at Gibraltar with Mr. Rueth was truly the only thing my highschool experience was lacking. Being able to realize that dream is more than I could ever imagine."
Eyes water with nostalgia as other students reminisce about their experiences with the acclaimed educator.
"He's always been a role model for me," sniffles Ainsley Nelson, another former student of Rueth's. "His constant control of the class, his leadership, his incredible fashion sense.. I'm sorry.. I need a moment."
It is very important for young students to be able to look up to their teachers as intelligent and mature adults. Gibraltar administrators have clearly taken a step in the right direction with this decision, and the entire community is waiting with enormous excitement for the start of the new school year.

Swimsuit Model/ Drug Lord: My Kind of Woman.

37 year old swimsuit model Simone Farrow was arrested in Queensland, Australia last week, after being accused of shipping the drug methamphetamine around the world via Fed Ex and other postal services.
Farrow has used over 19 different aliases over past years, but pleads innocent saying, "The only reason I've done this is because someone was trying to murder me." Farrow blames various shady ex boyfriends for her covert activities, claiming that they felt "threatened by her situation." Under the stage name Simone Starr, Farrow has been modeling and promoting herself as a singer/songwriter on her website for years, all the while dealing crystal meth disguised in bath salts to clients around the world. Authorities say the business definitely involved a number of other people, but Farrow was found to be the brains of the operation. And we thought Walter White was the most unanticipated drug dealer.

Basketball Dad Gets "Like Mike" Tyson, That Is. He's an Ear Biter.

As we all know, 6th grade basketball is a ridiculously important part of life, and it is totally necessary to do whatever it takes to allow your team to win. 34 year old Timothy Forbes thought so anyway, when he attacked the coach of the team that had beaten his son's team. Police say Forbes pushed aside several ten and twelve year olds to get to the opposing coach, who he viciously attacked, biting off part of his ear. Several other parents tried to pull him away, but he fled the scene before the police arrived. The coach was rushed to the hospital where the ear was surgically reattached, good as new. Forbes turned himself into the Springfield courthouse and, naturally, pleaded not guilty to the array of charges he was facing, including assault and battery, disorderly conduct, and  felony mayhem.

Chinese Man Lives in Cage

If he's not a werewolf, and he doesn't have wicked step parents, what is it that causes 23 year old Wei Yun to be locked in a wooden cage all day? Born with both physical and mental problems, Yun could neither stand nor walk since birth. One day during his youth, Yun was crawling around unattended, and knocked over a pot of boiling water, causing him nearly fatal injuries. Terrified Yun would do something else to harm himself while left by himself, Yun's parents locked him in a wooden cage in his bedroom, so that they can go out and work and provide for the family. He has been there ever since. Yun's parents say it was difficult to make this decision for their son, but it was for his own safety. And he doesn't look like he minds it all that much, so, whatever works I guess.

Never Too Old For Ponies

An Olympic competitor since 1964, Hiroshi Hoketsu knows what it means to never give up on doing what you love. Hoketsu was born in Japan in 1942, and became the oldest Olympian to compete in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. At the ripe old age of 70, Hoketsu is back in the game, as he qualified last Saturday to compete in London. Hoketsu has been working with horses his entire life, and has won numerous awards and competitions, show jumping aboard his 15 year old horse Whisper. Not only could does this stud teach us all a thing or two about never giving up on our dreams, but about being a successful athlete as well. Let's hear it for Japanese healthcare!

My Dad is a Secret Criminal

Until February 8th, 2012, Edward Maher's family believed him to be your average Missouri man. Maher, 56, has lived with his wife and two sons in Kansas City, MO for years, running a traditional and respectable household, so it came as a small bit of a shock when he was arrested two weeks ago and charged with being and international fugitive, accused of stealing a $1.5 million fortune in Britain in 1993. Maher had been working as a security guard for an armored truck company, but had fled the country after committing this major felony. He was able to evade arrest and lead a reasonably normal life for nearly 20 years by holding inconspicuous jobs, making sudden, frequent, cross country moves, and paying in cash only. The family lived in comfort, and were described by neighbors to appear not overly wealthy, but frequent spenders. They avoided keeping money in banks, and it turns out they were also in debt to the IRS over $3,000. Maher's adult son Lee, 23, claims he knew nothing about his father's criminal past, and his wife refused to comment on the matter. British police have requested that Maher. nicknamed "Fast Eddie," be returned to his home country to be dealt with there, but this process could take up to several months. Maher's wife stated that they would follow her husband wherever he went, so I guess this wasn't really all that big a breach of trust after all.

Simple Names Lead to More Success in Life

Over the years, dozens of studies have been conducted on how a person's name affects them throughout life. It has been concluded that children with popular names (Jacob, Sophia, Michael)  get into less trouble with the law, boys with unisex names are more likely to be suspended from school, and even that girls with more feminine names, like Alice or Marie are less likely to pursue a career in math or science. Recently, it was determined that children with easy-to-pronounce names are more likely to be generally successful in life. Take Bill Gates for example. By common pronunciations and simple spelling, his name is incredibly easy to say. Studies show that when evaluating applications for a job interview, employers choose applicants with easy or simple names. Names with racial connotations or clearly expressed nationality are associated with negative feelings of complication and malfunction. Maybe now those quirky parents longing for originality with think twice about naming their baby Kyishaiwnnae or Aliaune.

Snake Taming Gone Wrong

Hoarding is a serious mental problem found in people across the world. A seriously entertaining mental problem that is. People feed on their ability to compare themselves to others in order to raise their own self esteem, so it is only natural that shows like Confessions: Animal Hoarding would be wildly popular. Recently featured on the show was Patrick, who owns over 20 different snakes and reptiles which, more often than not, are about double his own size. One morning, while taking one of his twelve foot snakes for a walk, Patrick was attacked by his own pet, and struggled to wrestle the snake into submission in front of his young son and sister, Shauna. Episodes such as this inform the general public about disorders like Patrick's and the harmful effects they can have on both the victim's on the people around them.

Mushroom Pickers: Lost and Found

It turns out mushrooms have more risks than poison or drug use! While mushroom picking in Oregon, the three members of the Conne family and their dog Jesse got lost in the wilderness. Dan and Belinda and their 25 year old son had lost track of where they were and eventually stopped trying to find their way out of the foliage. The family was forced to sleep in the hollow of a large log with nothing to eat, and even considered sacrificing their dog for food.  After six nights in the forest, they managed to use the screen of a cellphone and the blade of a knife to signal to the helicopter that found them.
"The wife had the Blackberry and I had the knife," says Dan Conne. "I kept flashing. The wife said, `You're blinding them.' But I wanted to make sure they seen us. I wasn't taking no chance."
They had five football fields from the nearest road, and only a mile from their own Jeep all along. Intelligence is questionable.

Stud Survives Nail Shot to the Head

Not much changed for Dante Autullo the day he shot himself  in the head with a nail gun.
Now, you would think that one would notice once a 3 and a quarter inch nail had been embedded in their brain, but in fact, it was not until the next morning, when he began to feel nauseous that Autullo even thought to seek medical attention. After viewing the x-ray shown here, Autullo asked if the hospital was playing a  joke. While using his nail gun, he had slipped, sending the nail into his own brain, just millimeters away from the cerebellum, the area of the brain involved with motor skills. Autullo was able to feel the nail graze his head, but as there are no pain receptors in the brain, silly Dante was unable to detect that something had gone seriously wrong. On the way home from the hospital, he even stopped to post his x-rays to Facebook. Autullo underwent a two hour surgical procedure and had a portion of his skull replaced with titanium mesh, but  is expected to make a full recovery.

PS- Mr. Dahlie, I think I really nailed this article. Ha. ..sorry.

Which Baby is Best.

On Saturday, January 7th, power couple Jay Z and Beyonce gave birth to their first child, a healthy baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter.
Carter, named for albums created by her parents (Blue for Blueprint, Jay Z's album franchise, and Ivy as in IV, the Roman numeral for 4, the name of Beyonce's latest album), has been long anticipated by fans of her parents and their music, and doubtless has a long and promising future ahead of her. Musical fans around the world look forward not only to watching little Blue grow up, but how it will affect her parents careers as well. Although Jay Z, age 42, is retired, he continues to make music and exude swagger daily. Beyonce, 3o, is still very active in the music industry, and performed long into her pregnancy. With all her ambition and talent, it is difficult to see becoming a mother as a negative thing for her career. Rather, this will just be another step in her life, and add to her already vivacious and lovable personality. With two award winning parents in the music industry, it seemed inevitable that she would eventually enter show business, and already, she has been featured in her first single, Grace. The song was written by Jay Z as a tribute to his daughter, and features her cries as he expresses the miraculous feeling of bringing new life into the world.
"He is a very protective husband," says Beyonce, "and since we found out I was pregnant I have seen the protective father in him. He is not only an inspirational artist, he is an inspirational husband. I know the next step on his journey is going to be being an inspirational father."
Blue Ivy's birth is going to be a huge step for both parents, but it seems to be a step in the right direction.
